Talk:Milly's Dislike
From Aspen Hill, Maryland, USA
Question
Did Milly's Dislike include part of Twinbrook? What modern landmarks define the western edge?

Good question. See this plat map and you can see that Milly's Dislike seems to pretty much follow Rock Creek on the western edge of the tract. The eastern edge, of course, is mostly defined by Bradford's Rest. You might want to read the "constrained by" part of that map carefully. Thardman 21:50, 5 December 2009 (EST)
I read the constrained by briefly thinking it would describe the path of Rock Creek but I didn't see that. If it really is between Bradford's Rest and Rock Creek that's a pretty dismal parcel. I've walked some of that land and it makes an OK park. Not much to farm there.
So is the 7th line the same one from Veirs Mill to the stone behind Dowlais Drive as in Bradford's Rest? If so, where does 8 go? Is that south of the court on Crispin Way?
Looking at the general dimensions without measuring anything my guess would have been that the western border followed Twinbrook Parkway. Not that it matters much, still not much of a farm.

I think that the tract you are thinking of, west of Rock Creek and west of Hermitage, might be either Prevention or Mill Land.
Point "A" on the plat map is actually at the stone behind Dowlais Drive, meaning that the 1st line runs along that fence line, north by NNW more or less to the back side of Crispin Court, and then the 2nd line takes a turn to (as best I can place it) halfway down the length of Sloan Street. From there, I'm not entirely sure, other than that the beginning of the 8th line is somewhere in the vicinity of Lake Bernard Frank, on the other side of MD-28.

Wow, I really am bad at surveying! For some reason I thought the first 7 lines of Milly's Dislike were constrained by Bradford's Rest. I thought that meant they followed the same lines for the first 7 of Milly's.
So was Milly's part of Rock Creek Manor over by Wood MS?

Isn't Prevention another of Bradford's tracts? Gfc62 15:40, 6 December 2009 (EST)
So far, I am having a really difficult time discovering much about "Prevention" other than that at least some of it was west of Rock Creek and South of Veirs Mill Road. It may have had as part of its boundary the Old Halpine Road.
Deed references in Rock Creek Manor subdivision do indeed in many cases make reference both to Bradford's Rest and to Milly's Dislike. See also the new article on Meadow Hall.
Also, google for "Boyd's Delay". Thardman 17:23, 6 December 2009 (EST)
Does the MDLandRec.net site have a complete collection of electronic records? I'm not able to find several records when searching by Liber/Folio. The error doesn't make it clear whether I'm making a mistake or that the book isn't online.
Prevention certificate 130 should be Liber FF 7 Folio 191 Patent to Thomas Butler Liber PL 4 Folio 98.
I can't find either on MDlandrec.net. Gfc62 19:06, 6 December 2009 (EST)
Not all of those have been scanned. I guess you found those references searching the Prince George's side pf plats.net -- try a bit farther up the page, where scans exist. See Certificate 1750, 1732/04/20, Prevention, William Beale and James Beale, Acres 1182. That's a fair chunk of land, and the general description seems to at least lie along Rock Creek, and th Beales were definitely land-holders in and around Aspen Hill/Layhill. Then again, they were also all over the Georgetown area as well. In that timeframe, it was all Prince George's County...

The references were from MD state archives patent indexes:

That start point for Prevention is pretty vague, a tree on Rock Creek!
Gfc62 22:16, 6 December 2009 (EST)
"Back in the day" they tended to do that. They'd pick a particularly large specimen, clear out some of the trees near it, and bind it with iron rings, as I understand it. Thardman 09:22, 7 December 2009 (EST)
