Dear Community Policing/Community Nuisance Workgroup Members, and others:
It was a beautiful sunny spring day for the rescheduled Festival yesterday, April 12, and the folks came out in great numbers at Fairways Condominiums on Bel Pre Road for the Community Festival sponsored by the Community Nuisance Workgroup, led by Barbara Latta, a resident of Fairways.
The tennis court area was festive with balloons, posters, the cat lady with her interesting table about looking after cats and wonderful handouts, the tables set up from the Recreation Department, MCPD with Linda Ridall and two officers, Lt. Hardy and a bilingual Spanish-speaking officer, Gayle Driver with her information on the States Attorney Office, etc. and wonderful snacks, and drinks and ice cream for everyone. Blanca Kling had done some good prior outreach with the Hispanic residents, and encouraged everyone to take flyers and learn more about county programs and services. A representative from Congressman Wynne's office spoke about the Congressman's support of the Hotspot projects.
The door prizes of Easter Lillies and beautiful baskets, gift certificates from Giant Food, Starbucks, Blockbuster Video were given away throughout the event by Sally who had a terrific voice with or without the bullhorn! Daisy handled the gate making sure that the adults filled out the Neighborhood Inititiative survey, which helps assess the needs in the community; the children had a terrific time, especially when the Fire Engine arrived towards the end of the event and they were able to go inside and really check it out wearing their Fire Department red helmets.
Based on my count well over 100 people attended, and Barbara Latta and her group, and Stephanie Jennings, all deserve a lot of credit for making this event such a success. Thanks to Thomas and his truck for returning the tables to St. Matthews Church, and everyone who helped clean up at the end. Some pictures are attached of the activities. We all felt good about what had transpired in building community in and around Fairways.
Sincerely,
Susan L. Johnson
